Expert Multiplex™ is a windows application that combines MPEG Video and MPEG Audio streams into an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 fully synchronized system stream. Expert Multiplex™ runs on Windows 95/NT and SGI Platforms. Expert Multiplex™ provides a rich set of user controllable parameters that enable creation of multiplexed streams, customized to the specific application. This provides minimum multiplexing overhead and enables maximum bandwidth for the highest video and audio quality. Expert Multiplex™ provides the user with detailed statistics on the multiplexing performance with the selected set of parameters. Additional functionality available upon request.

The MPEG specifications detail the system header fields that must be included in the multiplexed stream. But the specification leaves great flexibility into the distribution of video and audio elements within the multiplexed streams. MPEG streams are used in a very wide range of applications: from fixed bit-rate video broadcast systems, to variable bit-rate desktop storage media (Compact Disks and DVD), to changeable bit-rate Internet video. Most multiplexers available today have a fixed set of multiplexing parameters and can not be optimized for individual applications. Expert Multiplex™ not only provides a complete set of multiplexing parameters, but also provides visibility into the multiplexing operation. This enable a multiplexing operation that is tightly coupled to the end user environment.

Expert Multiplex™ can also be run in a batch mode. This allows you to automatically multiplex a large group of files. Expert Multiplex™ reads a parameter file upon start up so that parameters can be customized for each set of files to be multiplexed. The batch mode provides a convenient way to work with the other PixelTools products (like the Video and Audio Encoders) to encode video and audio clips and multiplex them into system streams with specific audio, video, and multiplexing parameters automatically without human intervention.
